It goes back to 1811. At that time most of the streets ran from river to river, so paralleling the Hudson and the existing road they laid out a plan that rotated 29 degrees east of a true north. Allowing traffic of the avenues to cross the island’s entire length. Because of the 29-degree tilt in the grid, the magic moment of the setting sun aligning with Manhattan’s cross streets happens known as a Manhattanhenge. This phenomenon happens twice a year. The sunsets and the sunrises each align twice a year around summer and winter solstice.
Stonehenge shares the same phenomenon.
